Heritage Defense Hoof Balm Farrier-Formulated Support for Daily Hoof Maintenance

Heritage Defense Hoof Balm is a comprehensive maintenance system formulated by farriers who've spent decades managing hoof care under thousands of horses.

Protect. Environmental barriers help seal out moisture and bacteria without trapping heat.
Condition. Natural oils help maintain hoof flexibility without softening the structure.
Defend. Multi-strain antimicrobials support hoof health at the surface level.

What It's Used For

  • Thrush – Support for persistent frog challenges
  • White Line Issues – Penetrates and protects compromised hoof wall areas
  • Grease Heel & Scratches – Soothes irritated skin
  • Bacterial & Fungal Concerns – Multi-oil blend addresses resistant strains
  • General Hoof Conditioning – Daily maintenance for barefoot and shod horses

How It Works

Most hoof products are either too harsh (caustic formulations that can affect healthy tissue) or too passive (cosmetic conditioners that don't address underlying issues). Heritage Defense Hoof Balm uses a layered support system inspired by historical farrier formulas, refined with modern antimicrobials.

The Formula

Antimicrobial & Antifungal Support
Pyroligneous acid (wood vinegar) helps alter the hoof microbiome to discourage pathogens rather than eliminating everything on contact. We pair it with Manuka oil, oregano oil, and tea tree oil—each addressing different bacterial and fungal concerns. Boric acid provides additional antimicrobial support. When one pathogen develops resistance, the others provide backup support.

Structural Support & Maintenance
MSM supports hoof wall integrity and helps reduce inflammation response. Zinc oxide creates a protective barrier while supporting tissue maintenance—important for white line issues and sole concerns. Diatomaceous earth provides additional structural support with its unique silica-based composition.

Environmental Barriers
Pine tar helps seal the hoof against moisture intrusion. Bentonite clay, kaolin clay, and diatomaceous earth help draw out impurities and create a breathable protective layer that doesn't trap heat or restrict hoof function.

Conditioning Agents
Shea butter, beeswax, and coconut oil help keep the hoof wall flexible without softening it. These penetrate deep into the structure, helping prevent the brittleness that can lead to cracks and chips while maintaining the hoof's ability to expand and contract naturally under load. Polysorbate 80 ensures optimal blending and absorption of the oil and water-based ingredients.

Preservation
Cosgard (a natural preservative system) maintains product freshness and stability throughout its shelf life.

How to Use

  1. Clean the hoof thoroughly and remove debris
  2. Ensure the hoof is dry (or as dry as possible in wet conditions)
  3. Apply a generous layer to the sole, frog, and hoof wall—especially around the frog sulci and white line
  4. For deep fissures or cracks, mix the balm with cotton and pack it into the affected area for sustained contact
  5. For active concerns, apply daily until condition improves, then reduce to maintenance schedule
  6. For prevention, apply 2-3 times per week or after wet/muddy turnout

One 8 oz jar lasts 8-12 weeks with routine maintenance, or 4-6 weeks when addressing active concerns.

Why Horse Owners Trust Heritage Defense

Tested Against Professional Formulations
Test users reported Heritage Defense Hoof Balm compared favorably to veterinary-formulated antibiotic pastes, salicylic acid, and chlorhexidine preparations for persistent conditions like grease heel.

Farrier-Formulated
Created by Camp Thomas Jr., a farrier since 1996 with nearly 30 years of hands-on experience. This is the formula he uses on his own clients' horses.

Historical Ingredients, Modern Standards
Inspired by Clatter's Farrier (29th edition) and Horse-Shoeing and the Horse's Foot by Dollar and Wheatley—classic veterinary texts that documented hoof care practices before modern chemistry took over.

Made in Ocala, Florida
Small-batch manufacturing in the Horse Capital of the World. If a product works in Florida's humidity and wet conditions, it works anywhere.

Smells Like a Barn, Not a Chemical Spill
The natural oils and pine tar give it an earthy, woodsy scent that's pleasant to work with. Horse owners consistently tell us they want to use it daily—and consistency is what keeps hooves in good condition.
