Heritage Defense Hoof Balm

Frequently Asked Questions

Everything you need to know about Heritage Defense Hoof Balm

What is Heritage Defense Hoof Balm?

Heritage Defense is a professional-grade, clay-based hoof balm developed for real-world barn conditions. Small-batch produced in Ocala, Florida, it combines traditional farrier ingredients like pine tar and bentonite clay with modern hoof science to protect against thrush, white line disease, and environmental challenges.

Key features: Antimicrobial, antifungal, moisture-regulating protective barrier that packs into the hoof and stays put—even in wet, muddy conditions.

Who is this for?

Perfect for:

  • Working barns and boarding facilities managing multiple horses
  • Horses in wet, muddy, or humid conditions
  • Active thrush or white line disease cases
  • Preventative maintenance programs
  • Both shod and barefoot horses

Works in all climates. The formula regulates moisture balance whether your challenge is too much water or too little.

How do I use it?

Simple 3-step process:

  1. Clean & dry the hoof – Remove dirt and debris
  2. Pack generously – Apply to frog, sulcus grooves, white line, and sole. Work it into crevices.
  3. Apply consistently – Daily for active issues, 2-3x weekly for maintenance

❄️ Cold Weather Note: The balm may harden in cold temperatures (this is normal!). Simply warm the jar in your hands or in warm water before use.

How long does one jar last?

Each jar contains 9 oz of product. One jar typically lasts:

  • Maintenance (one horse): 1-2 months with 2-3 applications per week
  • Active treatment: 3-4 weeks with daily use

How fast will I see results?

  • Mild thrush: Improvement within 3-7 days of consistent use
  • Moderate cases: 1-2 weeks with daily application
  • Severe or persistent issues: May require farrier involvement to remove diseased tissue

Important: Heritage Defense is a tool in your hoof care program, not a replacement for farrier work. Consistency is key—skipping days slows progress.
